[net.garden] Bonsai Tree Questions

I am considering giving a Bonsai tree to my father for Christmas and
not being terribly familiar with the subject have a few questions 
somebody may be able to help me with.

   a) Are there places one should avoid when buying one of these
      trees.  (Note: the only places I have found them are various
      greenhouses)

   b) Any preferences as to the variety of tree?  I have seen several
      types and wonder if one is better (hardier, easier to shape, etc)
      than the others.
 
   c) What would be a good book on the subject?
