[net.garden] Potatoes

nosmo@pyuxqq.UUCP (P Valdata) (11/12/85)

We grew potatoes this year but were a bit late digging them up.
When we dug them, about 1/5 of them looked as though something had
been nibbling on them. Actually, it looked like something had been
taking great big bites out of them. These "bite marks" were
about an inch in diameter. The rest of the crop looked fine
and tasted delicious, as home grown potatoes usually do.

Any ideas what might have caused this? Are they really bite marks,
or is there some potato disease that makes them look that way?
Do moles eat potatoes (I thought they were insectivores)?
Are there any insects that eat potatoes? Did something happen because
we left them in the ground so long?

And I thought potatoes were our one crop that was deer-proof!
