If you have access to fireplace ashes, you can put a border of them a
couple of inches wide around the plants you want to protect; be
careful about leaves touching the ground outside the border, and
similar stuff. This works, but you have to reapply the ashes after
rain or watering, so it's somewhat of a pain.

I guess everyone knows that commercial slug/snail repellers are dangerous
to have around if there are small children or pets in the area.

I thought garlic protected against vampires.....

Crunched-up eggshells have the same effect and don't wash away as
quickly. You may have to resort to slug traps - bait shallow bowls with
beer or yeast and water, then just go out in the morning and throw
away the drowned critters.

take some old piepans or other cheapy disposable plate things, and dig them
down level with the ground next to your garden. Fill aforementioned
receptacles with beer. Slugs love beer and will crawl in drown...the worst
thing that can happen is that your dog will drink it. Don't let him drive..

For Slug control, one book ("Winter Gardening in the Maritime Northwest"
[excellent]) has lots of info about slugs.. Some things people don't
realize: slugs are migratory, this means even if you go out and kill all of
them in your yard, new ones will be passing through; ducks eat slugs.
One suggestion is a fence made out of sheet metal shaped like the picture
below (slugs can't climb it).
