[net.garden] Nematodes

imm@harpo.UUCP (Irving McNair) (03/12/86)

I received a catalog suggesting nematodes for the control
of squash borer. My local county agent said it would not
work. Any comments from the gardners on the net.

From what I've heard of what nematodes do to plants (especially
root veggies), it sounds like bringing in rats to control your
cockroaches. :-)

Seriously, I've always heard of nematodes as something to get
rid of, and not something to encourage.

Most people try to keep nematodes OUT of the garden ! They
eat away the roots and stems of plants (but marigolds will keep
them away from your tomatoes and peppers).

Common nematodes eat plants, but some are predatory and eat bugs. There are
even some types of nematodes that eat other nematodes.
