>From what I have seen of the guts of a single, you may have a broken brake shoe 
(I guess you would call it).   Inside the hub is a conical Archimedean 
screw type device that expands a pair of steel shoes, that form a cylinder, 
when the pedalling backwards motion is encountered.  The whole mess is collapsed
by a circular spring around the shoes.   So, either the spring or the shoes
could be gnarled.
    The system is quite elegant but simple.  There are books available on the
subject and this could be your last hope.   After working in a bike shop
for a summer I can say that there are not a hell of a lot of mac-a-niks that 
will touch a single anymore.   Now that I have ruined your day...
