HELP! I want some (comfortable) glasses/goggles that cover my entire eye (so as to keep out dust and bugs). I have a pair of ski goggles, but they're not that nice. What I want should be closer to sunglasses (maybe even polarized). Does anyone know: 1. What these things might be called for identifying? 2. What kind of store would carry them (bike shop??) ? 3. If such a place that has things like this exists in the Boston/Cambridge MA area? -Thanx -- Randwulf (Randy Haskins) genrad!mit-eddie!rh or... rh@mit-ee (via mit-mc)

I have been using a pair of Ray-Ban Ambermatic All Weather Sun Glasses for all outdoor activities, including bicycling. These are the type that have lenses that change color density as the light levels increase. Eye coverage is very good with the pair I chose. The wire ear pieces loop around the ear so you don't have to worry about the glasses slipping or falling off. Back when I bought mine, I paid about $40 (5 yrs ago), and got them at a local sporting goods store. Other places where you might find suitable types of glasses are: 1. Surplus store - aviator type glasses are light and give very good coverage. 2. Gun shops - shooting glases are very similar to those mentioned above. Good luck. Dave (ihuxk!db21)

Although I have never used them for biking, I have a pair of Bausch and Lomb (sp) "Glacier-Glass" sunglasses that I use for skiing. They have leather side shields and are very dark. They should be available at any reputable mountaineering/camping shop. They are also only about $26. There are other kinds of glasses with side shields, but I haven't tried them. You might find mountaineering sunglasses, with leather protectors around the periphery, will do just fine for biking. There are lots of kinds--check them out at your local mountaineering store/expedition outfitter. I have never actually tried them for cycling, but my guess is that nothing gets by the leather. Glacier glasses are great for climbing mountains, etc. but I would advise against them for bicycling. The leather on the side blocks you peripheral vision, which could be dangerous on a bicycle. Gary Mager mager@uw-beaver
