No group on bicycles would be complete without a discussion of the merits of sew-ups vs. clinchers (no flames, please). I was a real snob about this back when I was racing, and only rode sewups. Now I'm getting back into biking, but as a tourista, and I'm using light clinchers (specifically 700 X 25 Specialized Ultralights). They seem to ride and handle nicely, but not as nicely as I remember sew-ups behaving. Do people who have used this sort of clincher side-by-side with sew-ups have any comments? rick floyd uucp: (seismo | allegra)!rochester!rick arpa: rick@rochester

I have both 700*25 clinchers and sew ups, and I much prefer the sew ups. I also find that the clinchers wear out very quickly whereas the sewups go on and on and on. My only complaint with sew ups are the cost, and the amount of glass I see on Ann Arbor's roads. For in town riding I use the clinchers because repairs are easier, when I hit the high road I use sewups. Peter Ford ...!mb2c!uofm-cv!pf
