I just received Bicyling Magazine in the mail and only got through the editor's introduction. Anyway the article started off by saying that the Race Across America should be over by the time "you" get this magazine. I happen to think this is very important event (or at least should be) and have not heard or seen a word about it other than the few articles in bicycling. For those of you who have not heard of the event; it started last year as the Great American Bike Race. It included 4 of the finest long distance riders in the United States. The ride started in Southern California and finished in New York. Lon Haldemann (sp?) won the event in just under 10 days if memory serves me correctly. But anyhow this years event was to be better organized and hopefully more publicized. Well if the event has already happened I sure have not heard about it. I'd like to think that this event is "part" of the start of something big - the rebirth of bicycling as a recognized sport in the United States. Does anyone else out there agree? More importantly for now, has anyone heard of the results of this grand event and possibly post them to the net? Thankyou in advance, Larry Cohen decvax!larry

As of 7:30AM CDT on Wednesday, August 10th, the leaders of the Race Across America were in central Illinois. Lon Haldeman was in first place - 60 miles ahead of 2nd place Michael Shermer. In third, 118 miles back, was Seecrest (sp). Of the sixteen original starters, there are nine left. The route this year is longer than last year's route. The course came through Colorado this year and climbed up to 11,000 ft. to cross the Continental Divide. I was driving Interstate 70 Saturday morning and was surprised to see Shermer's entourage. I stopped to say hello and found Shermer getting a foot massage. He told me that he had just woken up from a 15 minute nap. His crew members told me that was the first sleep that he had gotten since starting in California three days before. I would guess that he has probably slept some since then. If I hear any more about the race, I will post it to net.bicycle.

Here's the latest on the Race across America: Still in first with a 67 mile lead is Lon Haldeman Second is Penseyrees(sp), with Beeson in third 97 miles behind Haldeman. Secrest has fallen to fourth back at 125 miles. Two other riders are 220 and 250 miles behind the leader, with the remaining two contenders around 300 miles back. This information is current as of 9:00AM MDT on Friday, August 12th. This is the 10th day and the leaders have covered almost 2700 miles. The remaining distance ( at the Ohio- West Virginia border) is just under 500 miles to Atlantic City, New Jersey. That is where the RAAM will end. Note that Michael Shermer has dropped out. Shermer had been in second place for much of the ride, keeping Haldeman in close contact. I haven't heard of the reason for his departure from the race. Stay tuned for further info.................... conrad
