[net.bicycle] Avocet Cyclometer 20

gunser@ihuxx.UUCP (08/17/83)

Has anyone purchased one of these yet?? For those of you who don't know
the Avocet Cyclometer is a new product which measures and displays speed,
distance and elapsed time. I have been thinking about buying one and
was wondering if anyone who might already have one could answer some
questions. In particular how easy is it to mount? Can it be quickly
removed or does it stay attached to the bike once you mount it there?
How weather proof is it? What kind of sensing unit is used on the front
wheel? This seems to be good bargin for the cost of only $24.95 as
compared with the much larger and more sophisticated "bike computers".
This need arises because of the fact that a Huret Multido odometer
does not work when using the Jim Blackburn "low rider" pannier racks.
(Which by the way I highly reccommend for anyone who is going to be doing
any distace touring. They really do make the bike MUCH more stable!
Also if you use a front handlebar bag, by putting the weight down low
you can eliminates the front end shimmy felt on fast downhill descents.)
I would appreciate any comments about the Avocet anyone could give me.
Thanks Much!

I agree that the Avocet looks like a good unit compared to
the other available 'bike computers'. I had one ordered at
the end of June. The dealer told me that Avocet would be
shipping them July 15. Around July 25 I called the dealer
to inquire about the whereabouts of my unit and he told me
that Avocet will not be shipping until mid September. Several
other dealers confirmed this, and none expressed any confidence
in Avocet's ability to meet this new self-imposed deadline.
A nearby bike shop (Mahn's) told me that they cancelled their
order of Avocet clothes because of repeated delays in shipping
the order.
So it looks likely that no-one has any experience with the
Avocet cycle-meter because, although heavily advertised,
it has yet to be shipped. Please if I am wrong and you
have managed to aquire one, tell me where you got it. I
am going on a trip in September and would love to get one
before then.

There was an article in a recent issue of Bicycling
magazine (last month, I think) that mentioned the
serious problems that Avocet was having with
shipping. Apparently, they are having trouble with
all of their products, not just their speedometer.
Avocet blaimed it on their raw material suppliers,
but that is really no excuse.

According to my local dealer, the reason that the cyclometer is not
yet available is because their (CMOS) chip didn't work, and they
had to do a turnaround on it. I never expected to have that problem
for a bicycle part.
