Hello everybody! I just started reading this group today. My brother and I have been planning on riding from San Diego to Los Angelas for some time now, but most maps aren't very helpful. So I was wondering if anyone out there can give me any info about routes, pitfalls, etc. I live near UCSD (northern San Diego). I would take S21 or El Camino Real up to Oceanside, but I don't know what to do from there. Do they let bicycles through Camp Pendleton? In LA, we want to visit our cousins in Palos Verdes. Do any of you LA'ers have any tips about riding through Orange county into that area? Thanks, Alan J. Hu {ucbvax,...(I don't know what other sites fit here.)}!sdcsvax!ajh

In addition, chances are most of the signs have been stolen by now. There are several books on bike riding in Southern Californa that you might be able to find in a bookstore or library. Whenever a freeway is the only road through an area, it is perfectly legal to ride your bicycle on the freeway. If you ever go on US 101 between LA and SF you will notice signs on the side stating that pedestrians, bicycles, etc. must exit. This means there is now a frontage road that one can take. The frontage road is usually the old two lane road that 101 used to be before they put in the freeway. Speaking of the bikecentennial trail, does anyone have any information on whether it is still maintained, and (more importantly for me) whether there is/was a branch through Texas? I am especially interested in a route from Dallas / Fort Worth to Galveston (or what's left of Galveston). ...(ctvax|microsoft|laidbak)!trsvax!ljw (Larry J. West)
