[net.bicycle] Cars and bikes

Mr. Bunje is of course right; many cyclists ride carelessly and
irresponsibly. For example, I often encounter cyclists riding against
traffic; I yell at them when I see them, since wrong-way cycling is
a MAJOR cause of cycle-car accidents (I hope none of you does it).
It seems that a lot of people think of bicycles as toys and simply
don't take them seriously as part of traffic. This is unfortunately
true of some cyclists as well as many drivers (most drivers, as far as
I can tell).

P.S. Bicycle as if you were invisible? Bad advice, I think; a better
idea is not to be invisible. Bicycle a straight line along the shoulder
of the road, instead of zipping in and out among the parked cars; signal
turns; use lights at night; look drivers in the eye when turning or
merging.
