[net.bicycle] roof-top carriers

I would like some recommendations on car-top bicycle carriers.
Preferably ones that can carry things besides bicycles, also.

Is it better to have bikes be upright or inverted when they're on
a roof rack? I assume upright because the upright racks from one
manufacturer cost more, but I don't know a real reason.

One problem with carrying your bikes inverted on top
of you car is that, unless you take precautions, the
grease will get blown out of your headset.
Bicycling magazine (I think this is where I heard
it) recommends wrapping your headset with sections
cut from old inner tubes to solve this problem.
