[net.bicycle] Cycling in Ireland

bnp@ihldt.UUCP (Bruce Peters) (03/21/84)

It appears that this summer, I may be able to spend some time
(approx 3 weeks) in Ireland, and I was interested in the possibility
of traveling by bicycle. I was wondering if anybody has had experience
with ths type of travel, and what their suggestions/comments would
be. A few preliminary questions come to mind:

	1. What are the possiblities of using hosteling/camping
	techniques for reducing travel costs?

	2. What difficulties are to be expected in transporting
bicycles/panniers/camping stuff through airports and via
	commercial airliners?

	3. Any suggestions as to caliber or quality of bike to
take? Is there any special equipment that we should take
or avoid (steel rims vs. alloy, etc.)?

	4. What type of weather can be expected? Is lots of "rain-
gear" a good idea? I would think its always a good idea to
have extra "warm stuff" along, but I want to avoid lots of
	extra weight.

	5. What about anticipating bicycle troubles? Waht type of
spare equipment is of highest priority (tubes, spokes,
	cables)?

If anyone else is interested in the results of this query, please
let me know and I will forward the results. And, as always
