#N:uiuccsb:16200008:000:1052 uiuccsb!thielges Mar 26 14:26:00 1984 Around where I bike (Champaign county area, Ill.) the land is very flat and the county roads are almost perfectly straight. Most of them (99%) are aligned north-south or east-west and spaced exactly one mile apart from one another. In fact, a map of the county roads looks more like a piece of graph paper. The roads are numbered even multiples of 100 depending how far they are from the sw corner of the county. In other words, road 1200 north is the e-w road exactly 12 miles from the southern border. Now, it sounds like navigating around the area is no problem, so long as you can understand cartesian coordinates, right ? Nope, some of the locals have made things a little more interesting. About half of the crossroad markers (they look exactly like the street name signs you see on city street corners) have been twisted 90 degrees to fool unwary travellers. Has anyone else noticed this type of foolishness in your area. Please post your responses so we all can know which areas to watch out for hostile locals. Bart Thielges
