This is an answer to Bob Fischell's inquiry. I used to wear a Bell, but it cracked when I was hit by a car, so now I use a Protec that has a polyurethane liner; I do not know what model it is, but it is about 5 years old. I have been over the bars twice in it, so now it has asphalt marks on it. Before hard helmets were available, I went over the bars on a track bike when the brake came off the fork on the road and caught in the wheel. That is the only time I have been knocked out in a crash. As defensive as you may be, you never can tell when something may happen. Suppose your front tire blows while you are bombing downhill?
