I got to wondering just how many people use helmets. In two days this weekend, around Boulder, CO, I saw 118 cyclists total; 32 were wearing helmets. That's about 27%. It's significant, but not great. Would anyone from another area care to count for long enough to get a reasonable number and post what you see? -- ...A friend of the devil is a friend of mine. Dick Dunn noted that about 27% of the cyclists he saw were using helmets. This seems to be about what I noticed this past weekend when I rode the Davis Double Century. Over the course of 200 hundred miles I rode and talked with a large number of cyclists, and about 1 in 4 wore some type of protective head gear. The most popular helmet that I saw was the new Bell helmet - the all black model, the V-1 (I think - correct me if I'm wrong). Next most popular were the Bell Biker, Skid-Lid, and Brancale. Still most of the crowd I was riding with went helmet-less, but thats the bike racers mentality for you. For the record I finished the ride in 10 hours 12 minutes, just missed the 20 mph barrier, darn it.
