>Any comments on the Skid Lid helmets? They look like they are real >comfortable, but I wonder how much protection they offer? Two thoughts: First, impact protection when you get sent headfirst is virtually nil, since the helmet is open in the center. It only protects against scrapes; I think a good helmet should give some impact cushioning as well. Second, consider the small-but-significant possibility that the fingers that go toward the center of the helmet can catch on something as you're flopping around. I'd like to know how likely that really is, 'cause the thought of what would happen is slightly nauseating. -- ...Stop to smell the flowers. I used to wear a Skid-Lid because it seemed cooler (especially for Texas summers) but I was always nervous about how well it would protect me. When the Bell Tourlite came out, I decided to get one, heat or not. I've been wearing it two summers now (going on three). It's as cool as the Skid-Lid, in my opinion, and I feel much better now. About a year ago I convinced my wife to trade her Skid-Lid in on a Tourlite too, and she has had no complaints as regards the heat. (She actually does more heat-of-the-day biking than I do). After I read the results of the Snell test on the Bell and Skid-Lids, I was even gladder I made the switch. -- Bill Jefferys 8-% Astronomy Dept, University of Texas, Austin TX 78712 (USnail) {ihnp4,kpno,ctvax}!ut-sally!utastro!bill (uucp) utastro!bill@ut-ngp (ARPANET)

My wife and I have found no discomfort wearing full-face helmets in 90+ weather; the helmets have lots of insulation, and our heads are cooler than if exposed to the sun. Of course, we have engines to do the work, so we are generating a lot less body heat, but given the alternative (head injury), our decision is to use the best (maximum protection) helmets available -- always, and without exception!
