I've been reading all the input to the net concerning toe straps. I'm just getting back into the sport, after a layoff of four years. I bought some straps and clips for my bike, just before the Memorial Day weekend, and rode all weekend with them. This was facilitated by the fact that my foot kept slipping off the pedal, as I was trying to maintain a quick cadence. All I can say, is that it was a super inprovement over no toe straps, and I would recommend that everybody use them. Contrary to what some people have said, I had no problems getting my feet out in a hurry (even when clamped in pretty tight). I simply practiced pulling my feet straight back ( instead of up or out ), and found that out on the road, it was simply reflex action. I even found a great improvement of pedalling efficiency with the straps loose, so if you feel insecure (or perhaps for starting out with the straps and clips), you should go ahead and use them with the straps somewhat loose.
