[net.bicycle] One up on "uncircular cranks" - neat idea?

trough@ihuxa.UUCP (Chris Scussel) (06/21/84)

Somewhere along around 1965-1967 the father of a friend of mine let me ride a
bicycle equipped with an invention of his. It was an interesting idea: a
mechanical crank assembly that arranged for the "up" pedal to be in front of
the crank axle when the "down" pedal was at its lowest. Of course, this requires
that the pedals not always move in unison, resulting in a VERY peculiar sensation
while pedaling. I suspect that one would get used to it be long, though. I've
never seen or heard of such a thing since. Has anyone else? I'm not really a
biker (not like most of the rest of you, anyway), I just thought I would mention
this because it seems interesting. So, if I seem out-of-touch with this, sorry.
