I use a 1/4 inch thick cable with a master lock (combo), it is about 6 ft long. Many years ago I developed a method for using the cable that gives it infinite superiarity over a chain. The best way to discribe this methiod is first to discribe the normal method of using a cable. NORMAL METHOD: Dismount front wheel and place next to back wheel. run end of cable through center of frame, both wheels, around object and back to other end of cable. Efective length of cable 3 ft. MY METHOD: take cable. notice that the ends are loops that have the cabablitity to pass the cable through its own end. take 1 end of cable. pass other end through its loop. this shoud be done so that the loop is formed around the main down tube. (you are going to have to fight the coil in a precoiled cable to do this but it is worth it). now you have a 6 ft long cable that is ancored to your frame. take free end, pass through rear wheel, then through front wheel (not dismounted). Then take it to object you wish to lock to, pass around object and fold cable back upon itself (you cant pass it through its end for to do so would require passing the entire bycicle through the end (topological but not pratical). But you can lock the lock in such a way so that it completes the loop (ie the lock shank goes through the loop and around the cable body.) I wish I was more expresive with words or had a mac to draw it and send the picture. Any way with this method you get 6 ft of efective cable (minus the ends). -- Kurt Gluck SPL 1c273a Bell Communications Research Inc 6 Corporate Place Piscataway NJ, 08854 ihnp4!pyuxhh!kurt (201)-561-7100 x2023
