[net.bicycle] Keeping ones feet dry...

howard@garfield.UUCP (Howard . Campbell) (06/19/84)

I was wondering if such a thing as
		waterproof footwear coverings existed?
I seek protection from rain, and front wheel
spray ( the type that effectively soaks one's
footses ) when wearing light ( running ) footwear.

I was thinking of something that could be easily
removed and folded up once point B ( or Z ) was
reached. I was NOT thinking of wearing boots,
which are quite horrible when on a bicycle.

Yes, there are many waterproof booties that fit over your bike shoes and
even have slots for cleats. Out here they're very useful. Most all shoe
manufacturers make them - Rivat and Sidi to name two, and there are many
companies that make just rain gear, such as Hurley, that make booties, booties
with chaps, etc. Prices are around $20 retail, cheaper at mail order - but
try a pair on first. One manufacturer's size 43 may not be another's.

I have been using rubber Totes for years. They are light, easy to fold
when you don't need them, and do a perfect job of keeping your feet dry.
I wear Gore-Tex Pants, that I clip at my ankles over the Totes, so no
water ever gets in. Toe clips are no problem.

Anyone else tried this?

Most of the cycling shoe manufacturers offer some sort of shoe cover
which can be used if the weather gets to cold for the tootsies. They
are indeed expensive, I know that Sidi, Duegi, and Vittoria offer
these things - the Vittoria shoe covers price is $26.98. Most come
with zippered backs and some sort of Velcro ankle band to secure them.
They all come with a cut out bottom to allow cleated shoes access to
the pedal.

Other goodies I've seen are toe-clip covers and rain chaps - the rain
chaps I've seen were made by Burley, priced at $35.98. The rain chaps
were offered by Palo Alto Bike Shop, Palo Alto Ca - they have a fairly
good mail order catalog available.
