[net.bicycle] O'Reilly and Nitz set *WORLD* records!

geoff@callan.UUCP (07/08/84)

I simply don't believe it! Rory O'Reilly rode a kilometer time trial in
1:03.39 yesterday (Friday) at the Olympic trials. This is a new world
record--something I had given up on seeing from an American until the late
80's. Leonard "Harvey" Nitz proved it wasn't a fluke by setting his own
world record in the 4000 meter pursuit (sorry, I don't remember the time).
Nitz, saying that he was feeling "incredibly good", said that he wouldn't be
surprised if he lowered the mark still further in the pursuit finals today.

WAY TO GO, GUYS! ON TO THE GOLD.

(condensed from an article in the LA Times, 7-7-84).

In other racing news, the Tour de France is starting off with a big bore. All
of the finishes except one have been massive pack sprints, with all riders
assigned the same time. The one exception was when three nobodies were allowed
to escape and pick up *17 minutes* on the pack. They now lead, of course; the
closest real contender is Phil Anderson at about 12 minutes. Fignon, Kelly,
Hinault, and LeMond are all at less than 15. The yellow jersey will probably
remain with the nobodies until the race hits the mountains in the 11th stage
next week.

follow the race, try "upi n,s,tour and france,6/29-,rf,1,stop" from command
level to get the complete reports from day 1).
