Tuesday was the Colorado national monument stage of the Coors classic. Colorado National Monument is a beautiful park outside of Grand Junction Colorado in the western part of the state. The womens race is one lap through the park for 48 miles. Connie Carpenter won it in 1982 averaging 24.54 mph and won it again this year. It started with a clear two woman breakaway on the up hill into the park and finished with Connie pulling away to win in solo style. The men run the same course through the park but loop twice. Their race is 90 miles. The Columbian Fabio Parra took off again and a chase was started by two americans (Alexi Grewal, I think, and someone I can't remember at the moment). The americans chased him down and then wore him down. "We punched his ticket", remarked one of the riders. Alexi came over the line first in a sprint. Straight from Fort Collins Colorado this is the Coors Classic News. Please feel free to add or correct anything said in this note. The men's team time trials was an exciting race on the flat, two laps between Boulder and Longmont colorado. The Seven Eleven team mopped up the compitition. catching and passing the Swedish team before the finish, starting 2 minites behind. A member of the Irish team broke his collar half way through and was pushed for about 16 miles by a teammate riding beside him. Then to Estes Park for the womens Rocky Mountain National Park Road race. Connie Carpenter comes through to win just edging out a French rider in the sprint. The Men's Estes Park Criterium was also on Saturday with Connie Carpenters husband Davis Phinney winning the race and the day. Davis says it was american team work that did the job. Sunday it was off to Aspen for the Womens Criterium. Connie does it again. She thanks USA-Levi's team member Inga Thompson for helping her win. Also Sunday was the Coppermountain Road race for men. A Colombian Fabio Parra (I think) breaks away on his own and gets an impressive lead (order of a minute I believe). An american chase team forms an runs him down sending americans 1-2-3 over the finish. Phinney is out of this one and Doug Shpiro takes stage leader for Sunday. Monday we see the Aspen Criterium for men. Phinney should have been strong here but looses due to lack of team effort he says. I saw him on the news and he was really unhappy and angry about the whole race. This was also the first race where an american did not win. Italy came over the line first (If I remember correctly) with an american right on his wheel. Stay tuned for more classic updates. -Robert (animal) Heckendorn hplabs!hpfcla!robert
