[net.bicycle] A Biker's Rights and the Law

bhilden@druxj.UUCP (HildenbrandBE) (07/19/84)

Well, it finally happened. The police in Groovy Town USA
(AKA Boulder Coloarado) have turned rotten. Last night I
received a ticket for "not riding far enough right on the
roadway". The street in question has a 5 foot wide
bike lane(conspicuously unmarked) with cars parked in it.
I was using my usual defensive technique to avoid getting a
door in the face by riding on the white line that formed
the left boundary of the lane(give me enough clearance to avoid
doors). The police stated that a car following behind me had to
brake to get around me(oh, too bad) so I was impeding traffic.
As a champion of safe riding practises(I've been in newspapers,tv
and radio) I take this as an insult and am going to fight this
tooth and nail.
My question is this, has anyone had similar experiences like this
or dealings with the law? I could certainly use any helpful
advice on judges, police , etc.
Its funny that when we as cyclists try to exercise our rights
we lose almost every time.

                     Thanks in advance,
