[net.bicycle] COORS CLASSIC UPDATE: Correction

bhilden@druxj.UUCP (HildenbrandBE) (07/21/84)

It was Jack Swart of New Zealand who won the Aspen Circuit Race
not Ian Stewart of Australia.

Quick Flash from the Morgul Bismark:

Connie Carpenter wins again as the field remains intact after
39 miles(3 laps) on the Morgul. Maria Canins was 2nd and
Rebecca Daughton 3rd.

In the men's race, Chris Charmichael escaped in the closing miles
from a 6 rider break to win by about 30 seconds. Doug Shapiro
was second. The biggest casualty of the day was Andy Hampsten
who was riding at the back of the pack("too deep", as Eddie B.
would say) and missed the break. He finished about 8th around
1:25 down. Also evident was a lack of teamwork from his Raleigh
team. Such is life.

Overall GC
Unless a miracle happens, its down to a 2 person race in both
categories. Doug Shapiro leads the Andy Hampsten by ~2 min while
Connie Carpenter leads Maria Canins by ~1:30.

Notes
Rebecca Twigg and Inga Thompson did not start the race and there
were a number of other men and women riders also taking an early
leave from the competition.
Alexi Grewal may ride the Olympics, appeals are being made.
Eddy Mercx(sp?) was at the Morgul for a big movie being shot
about bike racing. Entitled "the American Flyer" it is written
by Steve Tesich of Breaking Away fame and features the "Hell of
the West" bike race.
