[net.bicycle] Mail Ordering

paul@hpfclp.UUCP (paul) (08/06/84)

I haven't seen anything in this notes group about mail order firms. How
about posting some experiences dealing with them? Which ones have the
best services/prices/slections? I'll go first.

I have had fairly good success with Performance Bicycle Shop in North
Carolina. But they blew it on one of my orders. I ordered a pair of
wool riding shorts, and needed to change the order for a different size.
I called them up to change the order, they said "No problem", and I got
the pants 1 week later, the wrong size of course.

As far as prices go, they seem to be pretty good. It seems as if Palo
Alto Bicycles has the most expensive prices.

One of the *irritating" things about mail order cycle stuff is that it
appears as if a lot of mail order places don't carry a whole lot of
inventory, and are thus out of stock quite often. I tried to order a
jersey from Palo Alto Bicycles, and they quoted a 6 week backorder!

I have found that generally Bike Nashbar has the best price and selection.
I also have gotten the fastest turn around from them. I have not yet been
backordered.

The last time I ordered from Bike Nashbar, they filled about
half my order, saying they were out of stock on some items
like water bottles (!), a tire pump, and a freewheel.
Nevertheless, I have generally been pleased with Nashbar.
They have a good selection, and their prices are reasonable.

I've never mail ordered from Palo Alto Bicycles since I live
close to them, but they *are* rather expensive.

I have done business with Bike Nashbar & Performance Bicycle
shop. Both have prices lower than local shops. Nashbar is
consistently less expensive than other mail order houses and
is surprizingly quick in delivery. I ordered a bike from
them on Sunday(they are in Ohio) and had it on Friday(in California).
Everything else has been as quick. Performance Bicycle usually
takes at least three weeks for delivery. Both have an 800
telephone number, but both specify that it is for orders only,
not questions. They seem to be pretty flexible on this point.

Where are these places located when you talk about mail order?
Can you be more specific and give addresses and phone numbers
when you talk about a place? If not appropriate, I'll make
my request by mail.

Thanks
