Ok, I'm sure this group is very opinionated, so here's your chance to tell me what's "best". I'm in the market for a bike. I have very little idea what to buy, or how much to expect to spend. Here's a little info on what I want it for. Riding will be confined to city streets and short lengths of highway. A typical ride will be to or from work, which is less than 5 miles. I doubt that my total weekly milage will amount to more than 100 miles, unless I discover I really enjoy it. What should I expect to spend for something that will be nice enough that I will want to ride it instead of taking my car? I don't want to go hog wild on this stuff. Is $200-$250 a reasonable guess? Perhaps I should expect to spend $300? Anything in particular to look for in bikes in my price range? Anything to avoid? Thanks for your help, -- Scott Wiesner {allegra, ucbvax, cornell}!nbires!scott

#R:opus:-71400:uiucdcsb:16200048:000:295 uiucdcsb!thielges Aug 22 10:37:00 1984 Don't buy a 10 speed racer type of bike. There are many other bikes which are much better suited for your application. Ask at a good bike shop about commuter bikes. Sure, they aren't as stylish as a racing bike, but they are much better for all weather around town riding. Bart Thielges

Well, I bought my bike this weekend. I ended up with a 12 speed SR. Cro-Mo double butted frame, Shimano components. I'm happy with it, and feel like I got a good deal. (Please don't tell me I made a mistake. I don't want to know) The bike is a little more expensive (well, with helmet, pump, etc, a lot more expensive) than I had hoped, but I'm thinking more and more of riding it for exercise as well as commuting, so I figured I might as well get something I'd be happy with. I'd like to thank everyone who responded. Previous requests to the net for help (in other groups) have always resulted in one or two responses. I got no less than 10 responses from this group! Well done. Thank you. -- Scott Wiesner {allegra, ucbvax, cornell}!nbires!scott
