My can of WD-40 says that it is a lubricant in several places: "WD-40 lubricates and restores smooth operation ... " "WD-40 stops squeaks, cleans, and lubricates anything that sticks..." "WD-40 ... frees and lubricates operating controls, linkages, cables chains and locks." It also "contains petroleum distillates" (oil?). I use it on my bicycles' cables, but use heavy motor oil for the chains.

I have used wd-40 on my chain as well; I have found it to work well, and it has the benefit of not splattering all over me the way oil often does. decvax!cca!heiser

I use a `dry lube' on my chain. It is not messy, and comes in a aerosol can with a plastic spout for accurate spraying. It's fairly expensive, though ($4.50 CDN for a can). It's not washed off by water spray or rain. Tom Haapanen {allegra, decvax, ihnp4}!watmath!watdcsu!haapanen
