Although I don't know the exact details of absolute rise over run, etc., I have slides of my bicycle savagely attacking signs in Cumbria, UK that read "DANGEROUS GRADE FOR 2 MILES! 1 IN 3". I believe the Brits speicify their grades as rise over travelled distance (hypotenuse), not over run as in America. Therefore "1 IN 3" would be a 31.6% grade? If anyone really wants details, I have H.M.G.S. maps of the area. With a 31.5" (28 x 24) low gear, I still had to switchback and forth within the width of the road to get up those monsters, and it wasn't necessarily fun coming down, either! Also, a precise definition of "EXTENDED" would help.
