[net.bicycle] WHERE is the STEEPEST EXTENDED ROAD GRADE?

jans@mako.UUCP (Jan Steinman) (11/13/84)

Although I don't know the exact details of absolute rise over run, etc.,
I have slides of my bicycle savagely attacking signs in Cumbria, UK
that read "DANGEROUS GRADE FOR 2 MILES! 1 IN 3".

I believe the Brits speicify their grades as rise over travelled
distance (hypotenuse), not over run as in America. Therefore "1 IN 3"
would be a 31.6% grade?

If anyone really wants details, I have H.M.G.S. maps of the area.

With a 31.5" (28 x 24) low gear, I still had to switchback and forth
within the width of the road to get up those monsters, and it wasn't
necessarily fun coming down, either!

Also, a precise definition of "EXTENDED" would help. Does two miles count?
