[net.bicycle] Query on calories consumed while bicycling

karlton@decwrl.UUCP (Philip Karlton) (01/31/85)

Does anybody actually know how many calories are consumed while bicycling on
the level at 10, 15, 20 and 25 miles an hour? I have heard claims of
everything from 10 to 100 calories per mile at 15 MPH.

1st edition, MIT Press:

speed (mph)	metabolic heat
racer	tourist	kcal/min (1 Cal = 1kcal)

27	22.5	24
25	21	19.5
22	18.5	15
19	16	10.5
14.5	12	6
10.5	8.3	3.75
7.2	6	2.65
3.2	1.8	1.9
0	0	1.5

Racers use a less comfortable but more efficient riding position
(smaller wind resistance, more applied muscle).

We had several nutrition department grads in our racing club when I was in
Salt Lake City, and they were all concerned about # calories expended. The
conclusion they made was that it was a non-linear relation between speed*time
and calories consumed. The "average" value of interest was "for a 175 lb.
male at a steady rate of 27mph (eg. criterium pace), 600 calories are burned
in one hour". This doesn't seem like too much, but the real key is that if
you are in training form, your entire metabolism is geared up: you burn more
calories just being alive than you would otherwise. =Charlie Hunt=
