Has anyone tried non-round chainrings like Biopace or one of the oval
ones? Does it do anything for you? Do they allow shifting okay?

I have biopace (or biorace for us fast types) chain rings on my mountain
bike (I think 28-3x-48) and 180mm cranks (on a 19" frame!). The difference
from round rings is considerable. Good: for grinding a big gear or in general
using low revs, biopace is hot. Not so hot: feel strange when spinning,
sometimes it can be hard to get traction when in the small ring and climbing
mud (the power deliverly has spurts which will cause the rear wheel to break
loose under these conditions). Also, in order to get decent shifting
(mine shift fine) the rings are more round as they get bigger - the 48
does not feel much different than a round ring.
