Now that spring is approaching I'd like to venture out into the mountains around Seattle. It would be nice to have a roof rack, especially for my mountain bike (who wants all that mud etc. inside the car?). The requirements are: (1) It must be a non-contact roof rack (i.e. gutter mount) (2) It must be modular (i.e. have various attachments for skis, road bikes, mountain bikes). (3) It should be a well-known brand with good parts availability. The brands that I've seen the most copy about are Yakima (U.S.), Thule (Sweden), and La Prealpina (Italy?). All three brands satisfy (1) and (2), but I wonder what happens if you own a Thule or La P. rack and need replacement parts for it? All three are $$$, but probably you get what you pay for. Please send your experiences with these or other brands to me by mail, and I'll post a summary to the net.
