Just a tidbit to throw into the fray on cartop carriers... I noticed a car today that had Yakima tower assemblies (clamps), but instead of the expensive Yakima bars had what looked like a closet rod bolted to the tops. I don't know about it's stability, but it looked pretty sturdy. There were no attachments for skis, etc on it, so it looked like your basic low-cost setup. I've attached bicycles to similar arrangements with old inner tubes as tie downs and it's worked fine. (Upside-down, with the handlebars and seat resting on the cross bars.) Aside from the obvious weathering of the wooden rods, which could readily be replaced, this might prove a feasible set up for individuals on a budget... Les
