[net.bicycle] riding bikes over the speed limit

{bugs be gone}

Just was out riding yesterday started a sprint on a flat and got the
bike's speed up to 32 on my Cateye. Please no flames about how dangerous or
irresponsible that is. Anyway this was done in a 30 MPH zone. Of course
there was someone behind me in a car who underestimated my speed and tried
to pass. When he caught up he realized he was going fast. So I asked him
why he was exceeding the speed limit. He, of course, thought that since I
was riding a bike I would be traveling at a slow speed and was suprised at
how fast we were going.

All of which bings me to my point, in the past I have gotten verbal
warnings for speeding on my bicycle in Arlington MA. I also know of friend
who got a ticket in British Columbia for speeding but I would really be
interested in hearing if any got either a ticket or a written warning for
speeding in the U.S. Also I would like to hear how such a ticket could be
written up, I mean how do you enter the vehcile type?

I have gotten a written warning for going through a stop sign in San Diago
in 1980. In addition, while I was living in Newport, RI, there was a
effort to control the ammount of reckless bicycling by certain members
of the community and this included tickets and fines. The tickets, I
believe, were handled the same as a jay-walking ticket where where is
no need for a vehicle type. The only difference was that they earmarked
the fine money for some some community use such as school sports programs
or the local YMCA or something simmler.
