My girlfriend is a grad student at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute on Cape Cod. I have taken the Boston to Cape Cod bikeway down there several times. Some observations: The bikeway was laid out to be a relatively flat route between Boston, E. Bridgewater and Cedarville youth hostels. The Boston CC Canal distance is < 100 miles, so it can also be done in one day. The bikeway is not generally the most wonderful cycling experi- ence. Some of the roads are quite eroded and amateurishly patched. Much of the way is along suburban streets or heavily traveled num- bered routes. A few caveats for folks thinking of taking this path: The path has been shifted around some in the last year, and is very badly marked in places. The AYH maps are unclear in places, sometimes even labeling streets wrong. Therefore, DO get a good street map of the area and mark out your path (it CAN be done with the aid of the AYH map). Make sure you have plenty of water: there are long stretches with very little civilization or shade. Your best bet in getting to the Cape would be either take the Trail- ways bus (they let you take your bike, unboxed, for $2.50) from Boston or take the Boston to Provincetown ferry (much more $$). If you really want to take this path, I can give you some of the high/low points to expect. I am also scouting some shorter paths. matt leo
