My wife and I are planning a cycling trip around/through the San Juan
Islands (and other points of interest: Seattle, Vancouver, Victoria,
etc.) for early August. We also plan to carry as little gear as
possible (perhaps some minimal camping equipment). Since I've never
visited that area of the country before, I'd appreciate it if someone
could point out the "must see" locations, particular islands of
interest, availability of Inns on the islands (and are reservations
necessary...or can you just ride up and get a room). I'm hoping that
we can follow our impulses once there on were to go next.
We are more interested in using the bikes as a means to get from
point to point locations that ferrys don't access and to enjoy the
scenery (as opposed to trying to see how much milage we can put
on...we can do that at home).
Since we are just starting the planning, the need for reservations at
particularly popular locations would be very helpful. Thanks in
advance.

p.s. Also, has anyone had any experiance with the treatment of
bicycles by Amtrak? We plan to take the train from L.A. to Seattle
and back (with a stopover on the central California coast...Moro Bay
and sailing with friends).
