After 9 stages the standings in the Tour are as follows: 1. Bernard Hinault (FRA) 45:56:57 2. Greg Lemond (USA) @ 2:22 3. Sean Kelly (IRE) @ 2:51 4. Steve Bauer (CAN) @ 3:21 5. Phil Anderson (AUS) @ 3:38 6. Stephen Roche (IRE) @ 3:44 7. Charles Mottet (FRA) @ 4:11 8. Pascal Simon (FRA) @ 4:23 9. Eric Vanderaerden (BEL) @ 4:40 10. Paul Haghedooren (BEL) @ 4:49 As expected saturdays 47 mile time trial brought most of the favorites to the top. Hinault won the time trial by 3 minutes, Greg Lemond was second. This week they start climbing the Alps. This will sort the standings out even more. Look for Renault to work for Charles Mottet as he is their team leader in the absense of Laurent Fignon. La Vie Claire still has 3 riders in the top 5 (Hinault, Lemond and Bauer). It should be interesting to see who works for who, although I believe that Hinault will go for his 5th Tour victory. Another rider to look out for is Stephen Roche as he is a good time trialer and climber. Do not count out Sean Kelly either. The womens standings after 7 stages are: 1. Jeannie Longo (FRA) 14:36:05 2. Maria Canins (ITA) @ 1:05 3. Valerie Simmonet (FRA) @ 1:14 4. Heleen Hage (HOL) @ 1:38 5. Mandy Jones (GBR) @ 1:56 11. Janelle Parks (USA) @ 2:54 13. Phyllis Hines (USA) @ 2:29 Unless anything signifcant happens the next posting will be thursday or friday. So far CBS has had excellent coverage of the Tour every sunday. Mike Walpole
