A friend of mine and I (cerda) have been planning a bicycle trip across Texas. We have been actively planning for the last two years and are now looking for riders. We have measured the trail, taken LOTS of pictures depicting the route and are putting together a slide show to show to various bicycle clubs. Anyone want to go? The trail is about 1100 miles long and we plan to take 21 days to transverse the state. We start in El Paso on April 6 and end in Orange on April 26. We will be at the Kerrville hill country ride the weekend before. Send me (cerda) mail or see us in Kerrville. {ihnp4, seismo, ut-sally, allegra}!ut-ngp!cerda Now the official hype.... (Lawrence wrote this..) About five years ago, in an issue of Bicycling Magazine, Lawrence Walker originated the idea of an East-West bicycle trail across Texas that could be a part of a truly southern TransAmerican route... INTRODUCING THE TRANS TEXAS TRAIL Now, in time for the Texas Sesquicentennial, the TRANS TEXAS TRAIL is a reality. Almost 1100 miles long (!) from New Mexico to Louisiana, the TRANS TEXAS TRAIL has been intricately designed especially for bicycle tourists on U.S., state and county roads to include the widest variety of scenic, recreational and historical sites. From desolate desert (some even less photogenic than in latenight Westerns) to claustrophobic forests (that break those Hollywood stereotypes). From the Neches swamps Cabeza de Vaca roamed 450 years ago to the Republic of Texas' first capital at Washington-on-the-Brazos. From cypress-shaded Hill Country swimming holes to the Pecos River Bridge. From Indian pictographs in Seminole Canyon to the gleaming McDonald Observatory on top of Mt. Locke (Texas' highest road). RIDE IT. Over a thousand miles of continental drift... stark beauty, vast space AND picturesque, intimate countryside. A detailed set of maps is almost ready, and so is a guide describing the facilities and features along the trail. SADDLE UP. JOIN THE TOUR. Celebrate the Sesquicentennial in a heroic way! Bicycle across Texas April 6 through 26, 1986. (April is Texas' best month for weather and wildflowers.) Innaugurate the entire TRANS TEXAS TRAIL with the wind from West to East at a sometimes strenuous, most times laid-back pace. Baggage, sag and various food and accomodation services will be provided. Lawrence Walker is group coordinator and tour guide. For More Information Write: TRANS TEXAS TRAIL 1507 1/2 Nueces Austin, Texas 78701 U.S.A.
