In the most incredable set of circumstances, the Boulder Police stopped the mens Golden to Boulder Mountain race. The women had finished a criterium and the men were to race into town and finish under the same banner as the women. However, the Boulder Police said that the course was unsafe and blocked the road to stop the race. The riders turned off the course and proceded thru town to the finish. The race was oficially stopped at the police barricade. The police claimed that it would be unsafe for the racers to ride thru the crowd into town. Instead the racers had to ride thru city traffic to get to the finish. The course marshals were in place to control the crowd and traffic. Michael Aisner said that they were not told that the race would be stopped until they were less than 5 miles from town. Aisner took some of the blame saying that the close timing of the two finishes may have contributed to the problem. Basically instead of trying to help with a tough situation the Boulder Police panicked and did something stupid. Doug Shapiro was declaired the winner as he had a 2:05 lead over a chase group containing Andy Hampsten and Greg Lemond. Everyone in the chase group was awarded 2nd place. G.C. 1.
