Re this race deliberately taking place "in the heat of the summer":

Why? Are the supporters/organizers just trying to put the maximun
strain on the participants? Why not have it in the Spring or Fall?
(I could see avoiding spring rain, but the Fall, before snowfall
in the Rockies causes problems, sounds like a much better time.
For that matter, it could start in the West, so they get through
the Rockies as early as possible, and thus be scheduled as late
as weather there permits, allowing much cooler riding across
the Midwest and East.)

So is there a rational reason for imposing summer heat on the riders,
or is somebody just being mean to them?

One advantage of summer riding is more daylight. The RAAM riders
go on into the night, of course, but I think having more daytime
riding is a definite saftey advantage.

It IS fall. It arrived here in Colorado 8/26. I'm completely serious; our
weather has already shifted to the fall pattern and it did so last Sunday.
It snowed a little in the high country for the first time a little over a
week ago. If RAAM actually cuts through the high Rockies, then the
organizers have pushed it about as far into the fall as they practically
can.

What does he like better, watching them on TV ?????? How does he know what it's
like to ride a stage in the Tour, or any long stage race. He's very good
at the long distance stuff, but European pro racing is a lot different,
I'd expect he eouldn't like riding a tour stage because he'd be off the back
as soon as they started to go fast.
