I've had experience with both derailleurs. Superplate is a FANTASTIC
performer. Shifting is quite good, even with the 38 tooth wrap and thumb
shifters on my mountain bike. I suspect that under equal conditions (wrap,
shifters) it would do as well or better than Duopar.
Now for the bad news: I just smashed my Superplate (yes, it is possible).
Shimano, lip service notwithstanding, is not committed to parts availability,
so I could by a whole new Super or get another derailleur. Ironically, for
this reason I cannot reccomend it for ATB use, although for touring I wouldn't
hesitate.
I am replacing it with my second Duopar. Parts availability is excellent: one
might even consider taking spare parts on off road tours to offset the advant-
age of the Super in durability (I've found both to be quite sturdy.).
One plus for the Duopar is the ability to downshift under power while
climbing, which the Superplate can not.
I hear Huret is coming out with a mountain biker version of the Duopar...
Any confirmation of this rumor?
