OK, I'm the one who started all this controversy (which was precisely my intent!). After reading various postings, many of which were very informative, I've come up with another idea concerning derailleurs that might be worth batting around. Nowadays everyone seems to be using Ultra-6 chains (whether or not they have ultra-spaced freewheels). These chains are known to be less stiff than wider chains, such as the Regina Oro. I was using this very chain on my bike when I was having all the problems with my Duopar. Could it be that the Duopar can muscle around a more flexible chain but just can't handle the stiffer ones without destroying itself? Another possiblility, of course, is that my chain wasn't the correct length. However, none of the Japanese derailleurs that I've ever used are all that sensitive to chain length.
