Does anyone know of a decent bicycle rack that can be used in the back of a pick up truck or what is a good method of hauling around four bicycles in one. I have seen one on the road but couldn't catch up with the truck to determine who manufactured it.

I have a friend who carries 4 bikes in his pickup using a homemade rack. This is constructed using 4 2x4s placed in the bed of the truck. Each board has a quick release mechanism attached to one end, and two 8in pieces of wood nailed to the other end (parallel to the board). The quick release end is used for the front fork and the rear wheel is placed between the pieces of wood on the other end and secured with an extra toe strap. His rack is made so that the bikes are parallel to the axles, but I would imagine if your truck is not wide enough that it could be done either way. If you do it as he has, at the risk of insulting your intelligence, be sure to check that the handlebars will clear the side of the truck for a variety of frame sizes before securing the quick release mechanism to the board. For stability, each pair of boards can be connected in a rectangle using extra wood. Good Luck! -Leslie Winters
