[net.bicycle] Tires, Tubulars and Rims.

It's nearly that time again (for those of us in frigid climes)
to pull the bike from the back room and ready it for some fine rides.
Let's start a discussion on wheels.
I just got a Performance catalog and I am noticing that tubulars
(sew ups) are relegated to a smaller section in the catalog.
I recently switched to using Panaracer kevlars (c) on the ol' Arc en
Ciel's. Wow! A big difference over the clinchers ...wired-on's...).
However, there are now a lot of sub 200 gram tires on the market.
you can't get less than a 400 gram rim for these, but you don't want much
less than that riding on our eroding infrastructure here in the U.S.A.
My Arc en Ciels have taken some lumps (they're about 350 g).
How good are the new tires? Do they mount okay (I have tried
mounting the foldable tires on some Weinmann rims with no success. I needed
the wire bead)?
One review of the Specialized rim found a problem with uneveness
where the rim was joined. This is an expensive rim...does its cost justify
dumping tubulars for a wired on?

So far this year, I have been riding on a pair of Mavic Mod-E2 wheels
with Specialized Turbo/S tires & latex tubes. They hold up fine, they are
virtually bulletproof and they cost half as much as my silks. On the other
hand, they don't feel nearly as good after 100 miles or so, and they don't
handle as well ( at least to me).
From what I hear, the Mavic MA-40 rims are supposed to be the cat's
meow as far as the new super light tires go. They were designed to work with
the Turbo/V tires, and seem to be considerably lighter than the older rims.
While we are talking about new and improved, I'd like to hear some
feedback on the LOOK pedals and shoes. I should have mine in this week, so it
will be interesting to compare some notes.
