[net.bicycle] trouble with tubulars

pswmielke@watnot.UUCP (Peter Mielke) (02/27/86)

Four weeks ago I got a flat on my rear wheel ( not very
nice, especially with tubulars ). Anyways, being too lazy to fix
the flat I put on a new tubular ( just applying the glue onto the
old glue ). Everything is fine and dandy until yesterday when I
notice that the valve is bending to one side. It was then that I
noticed ( much to my shock ) that there was no adheasion
between the rim and tire at all. This I found very peculiar
because in the summer when I got a flat I just put the new glue
on top of the old layer and I never had any problems.

Is there anything I can do about this or should I remove the
old layer of glue altogether, and if so what is the best way.

You should re-apply the tire by putting glue on both the rim and
tire, and you should wait twenty minutes before mounting the tire
on the rim. Then you should wait twenty-four hours before riding
the tire. Not following all of these rules could cause the
slippage you got. Of course, you can't do this on the road, so what
you did suffices for getting home, but do what I just recommended
once you get home.

Having a tire slip on you while you are riding can cause a serious
injury, even though this is rare unless you are racing. All of
this trouble is really necessary. If you think it's a bit too much
just to have that lovely ride tubulars afford, then you are like me
and should quit using them. I did.
