[net.bicycle] Suggestions wanted on child seat for bike

luria@ucbvax.BERKELEY.EDU (Marc Luria) (03/04/86)

I'm in the process of buying a bike and want to buy
a child seat for my son who is 15 months old. Any suggestions
would be appreciated.

Don't take this personally, but as an ex-cabdriver, I think
people who use baby seats on the back of bicycles are NUTS!
If you skid out on some sand, or some moron in a parked car opens
a door in your face and dumps you, are you going to be able to
retrieve your son before a car hits him? If it's a minor tumble,
perhaps, but I've been witness to cyclers knocked unconscious,
fortunately, none of them had babies with them.

There used to be a fellow in Cambridge who used a sort of
rickshaw attached to the back of his bike to cart his kids
around. It was large enough to be seen by cars and certainly
looked safer than a baby seat to me.

Well, there it is, you see what ya wanna see, and ya hear what

This comes up about once a year.

A lot of people, me included, believe that those child carrier seats are
unsafe. If you take a spill, especially a full forward gainer, you can
seriously injure the child.

A better alternative is a bike trailer like the Cannondale "Bugger." The
child is much better protected, and the trailer will remain upright even
if you crash the bike. Most of them are big enough for two toddlers.

In any case, you should get a helmet for the kid, and pick one up for
yourself while you're at it. Even if you're just puttering around the
block after supper, you can't be too careful.
