with applications to remote sensing, robotics and biomedicine. Job duties
are flexible and have evolved rapidly with the development of the Laboratory.

Ongoing responsibilities are:

1. Management of the Laboratory's computation facilities. The System Manager
performs day to day system administration and has responsibility for the
installation, maintenance and upgrades to the Laboratory's hardware and
software. The System Manager has primary responsibility for system

faculty, staff and graduate students affiliated with the Interdisciplinary
Graduate Program in Remote Sensing. Departments represented include
Forestry, Computer Science, Oceanography, Geophysics and Astronomy,
Pathology, Soil Science, Geography, Electrical Engineering and Civil
   Engineering.

The immediate task is:

4. Conversion to Unix 4.2BSD including installation of ethernet-based local
area network. In addition to VAX's, the local area network will include
PDP 11/23's and SUN workstations. One of the PDP 11/23's drives a Comtal/3M
Vision One colour image display system and acts as a 1 Mbit/sec gateway
to the Computing Centre's UBCnet and MTS-G systems. Another PDP 11/23
will drive the Laboratory's Optronics C-4500 Colour film scanner/writer
that is currently connected directly to the VAX 11/780. We expect our local
area network to include gateways to other campus networks.
