New Oxford English Dictionary Research Project Manager The University of Waterloo's Department of Computer Science is seeking a manager for the New Oxford English Dictionary Project. The research project manager will plan, develop and supervise the project's technical activities, which will be executed by a seven-member technical team. Primary responsibility will be to direct the development of the database management system to sup- port the electronic version of the Oxford English Dictionary, producing system specifications, identifying critical paths in meeting the project's objectives and time schedule, and assuring system coherence and performance. Applicants must have demonstrated management ability as well as technical competence. To this end, qualified applicants should possess a graduate degree in Computer Science and must have several years' experience in developing systems and applications in the fields of data structures, databases, text management and/or information retrieval. This includes facility in design- ing and developing software in the environment of UNIX 4.2 BSD and C. Proven ability to schedule and supervise programming staff and activities to meet project deadlines is essential. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are critical for success- ful interaction with technical personnel, academics and external contacts. The Project's goals are an editing system and an electronic delivery system for the Dictionary. This requires pioneering techniques in the areas of database architecture and user interface. Documentation and Testing Co-ordinator ------------- --- ------- ------------ Responsibilities are the production of user documentation and the co-ordination of testing and quality assurance activities. The goal is to ensure that the system is useful and understandable. Qualified candidates will possess a University degree in Computer Science or some communications discipline. Demonstrated expertise in technical documentation, preferably with UNIX typesetting facilities, is required. Ability to interact with and support scholarly users of the dictionary is essential. Exposure to software testing would be an asset.
