The Office of the Dean, Faculty of Arts and Science, University of Toronto
is looking for 2 talented people to support computing functions in
the Faculty Administration Offices.
Position Summary:
"Under general direction of the Dean, incumbents are responsible for operation
and development of the Arts and Science Administrative Computer System,
currently consists of 4 super-micros running Xenix, 30 terminals, a host of
PC's, printers and communication devices, serving administrative needs such as
text processing, budget (spreadsheets) and personnel databases for the Dean's
and Faculty Offices and some departments. Responsible for system maintenance,
development and security. Analyse user needs and develop or modify appli-
cation programs. Maintain and enhance existing system and application pro-
grams. Advise and assist users in development, use and acquisition of
hardware and software. Advise Dean concerning computer purchases and
developments. Maintain technical liaison with other university computing
systems and services."
The ideal candidate would have a B.Sc. in Computing Science and 2 or more
years experience with Unix (and/or Xenix) and DOS. This person would be able
to move from "C" language or "Bourne Shell" programming to user training to
hardware configuration to systems analysis (some committee meetings) without
dropping a stitch. Being handy with either a soldering iron or an agenda is
significant. (That is to say, diversity is one of the satisfactions of these
positions.)
