     DESCRIPTION
     
     Athabasca University has an immediate  opening  for  a  Unix
     Systems  Programmer in the department of Computing Services.
     Under the general direction of the Senior Operating  Systems
     Programmer,  you  will  be responsible for the conversion of
     existing applications and utilities running under BSD  based
     Unix  variants to a System V Release 3 environment. You will
     also participate in the creation of new utilities that  will
     assist  in the control and maintenance of our expanding user
     login account base, and  perform  other  related  duties  as
     required.
     
     This position also will be responsible for problem  determi-
     nation  and  the application of technical knowledge to solve
     problems and apply improvements to various Unix  based  pro-
     grams  and  utilities.  The  position  will be working under
     scheduled deadlines.
     
     This is a contract  position  with  a  one  year  term.  The
     sucessful  applicant  will  be required to relocate to Atha-
     basca, Alberta for the duration of the contract.
     
     PROGRAMMING ENVIRONMENT
     
     Computing Services network of Unix based systems includes  a
     VAX  785,  and several Sun workstations and servers, VAXsta-
     tion 2000s, 3b2/1000s, and AT&T 6386s.  Supported  operating
     systems include SunOS 3.5, Ultrix 1.2, 2.3 and 3.0, and Sys-
     tem V Release 3.1 and 3.2.
     
     EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS/EXPERIENCE
     
     A good working knowledge of both BSD and System V Release  3
     UNIX  (to the system  call level) is essential, as is a very
     good knowledge of the Unix C programming environment.  Fami-
     liarity  with  terminal drivers and IP based networking is a
     definate asset.
